Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and Ilse DeLange not a success as a TV duo

A major setback for Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and Ilse DeLange. Their debut as a TV duo is anything but a ratings success: the first episode of POP22 doesn’t even reach the top 15 ratings.

You would think that two A-stars like Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and Ilse DeLange effortlessly collect hordes of viewers in front of the tube, but nothing could be further from the truth. Their debut as a presentation duo attracted little attention yesterday at half past nine. The first episode of their music program POP22 got stuck at 605 thousand viewers (13% market share).

Matthijs and Ilse flop

Matthijs and Ilse put down very poor viewing figures by the standards of NPO 1, the largest channel in the country. By comparison, the channel’s average night market share was 24% yesterday. The two are very far below that. The biggest competitor? That was Today Inside with 846 thousand viewers (19%) on SBS 6.

Not only Today Inside, but also RTL 4’s Vrienden van Amstel Live and NPO 2’s Nieuwsuur charmed more viewers at the same time than Matthijs and Ilse. 703 thousand people (16%) and 686 thousand people (15%).

Tired of talk shows

It will be very disappointing for Ilse that her music show with Matthijs does not score as desired. She wants to offer artists a better stage than the three minutes they get in talk shows. “I don’t want to sound sour, but in the Netherlands musicians are often asked to play covers on television,” she said last week de Volkskrant

She continues: “It’s quite understandable that you have a serving role in talk shows, and a lot has changed for the better in recent years, but I know that many artists are fed up from time to time, and think: at that time, I can also play my own song, in which I have put my soul and bliss.”

For now, POP22 consists of two episodes. If the viewing figures are also low next week, the chance of a sequel is relatively small.

Joris takes gold

On to the first half of prime time: there Joris Linssen took gold on prime time with almost 1.3 million viewers (29%). The most viewed alternatives were the all-evening Friends van Amstel Live concert on RTL 4 and Mr. Frank Visser makes a statement with 676 thousand viewers (16%) on SBS 6.

It is striking that NPO 1 immediately picked up again on the late evening, after POP22. The talk show Op1 experienced an above-average well-watched broadcast with 866 thousand viewers (24%). There are twenty thousand more than Today Inside had. Beau is left behind with 668 thousand viewers (19%).

Viewing figures

Other programs that did not make the top 15 include Studio Sport Eredivisie (639 thousand), Khalid and Sophie (546 thousand), Time for MAX (521 thousand), Shownieuws (489 thousand) and HLF8 (324 thousand).
