SC Freiburg missed the Champions League. Painful reality after a strong season.

Matthias Ginter was written in the face. After the final whistle, the defender cried on the lawn. The dream of the Champions League burst for Ginter’s SC Freiburg on the last match day.

In the direct duel for fourth place, the club had to give up 1: 3 at Eintracht Frankfurt. At the same time, Borussia Dortmund prevailed 3-0 against Holstein Kiel – and thus secured the last ticket for the premier class. Freiburg, on the other hand, will again take place in the Europa League next season.

Ginter, world champion of 2014, had great hopes for a success with his home club. Since returning in the summer of 2022, the 30-year-old has been a fixture on the defensive of the Breisgauer. In recent years, the SC has established itself in the top group of the Bundesliga. Before the game, Ginter had emphasized how important this development was for him.

“We have played for the Champions League three times in the past three years, once we became sixth, once fifth,” he said. One was there “where the music plays”, and that was exactly what was the goal this season – despite the strong competition. Ginter and the SCF will now compete again in the Europa League.
