Matthew McConaughey speaks in White House about gun law | show

Matthew McConaughey gave an unannounced speech at the White House on Tuesday. He shared the stories he and his wife Camila Alves heard last week in his hometown of Uvalde, where 19 primary school students were shot dead.

The actor showed a photo and drawing of victim Alithia Ramirez (10), who later wanted to go to art school in Paris. Alves showed the favorite green All Stars of the same-age Maite Rodriguez, who was so fond of nature that her mother did not want balloons released at her funeral. “These green shoes were also the only thing she could be identified by,” said an emotional McConaughey.

The couple spoke in Uvalde with relatives of the children who died and their two teachers. “You know what all these parents wanted, what they asked for? What each parent, in their own way, communicated to Camila and me? That they wanted their children’s dreams to live on. They want the end of their lives to matter,” the actor said.

The Texan indicated in his speech that he himself is a gun owner, but called for stricter gun laws in the US. “Responsible gun owners are tired of the Second Amendment being misused and hijacked by deranged individuals,” he said of Americans’ constitutional right to own a gun.

McConaughey argued for, among other things, raising the minimum age for heavy weapons, stricter background checks before purchasing a weapon and national ‘red flag laws’, which allow authorities and citizens to go to court to request a temporary weapons ban. for people who are a danger to themselves or others. “This regulation is not a step back, it is a step forward for civil society and the second amendment.”
