Matt Helders on new Arctic Monkeys record: “It’ll never be like ‘RU Mine?'”

Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders has given a preview of the colors of his band’s upcoming music. “It’ll never be like ‘RU Mine?’ and all that stuff, you know, the heavy riffs and stuff,” the drummer said in an interview.

Still, you can expect at least some riffs. The new pieces are again a little faster than the previous album by the alternative rock group. Roughly speaking, however, the songs will continue where TRANQUILITY BASE HOTEL & CASINO left off. He announced this in a conversation during the charity live stream “DrumathonLIVE 2022”.

“Do something different with every release”

Matt Helders told BBC Radio 5 Live in November that his band would “always try to do something different with every release”. When asked if the new album was ready, he replied: “Yes, more or less, yes. It was a bit disjointed in how we had to do it and there are parts that still need to be completed, but it’s all in the works.” At least one new single, if not a full-length, is expected to be released in the coming months by the band from Sheffield appears – after all, the quartet will be on the stages of a number of European festivals from August.

The voluntary self-control of the guitars

The Arctic Monkeys’ last album to date is entitled TRANQUILITY BASE HOTEL & CASINO and was released in 2018. ME reviewer Albert Koch gave it five stars out of a possible six. He concluded: “The greatest guitar band of their generation has subjected the guitars to voluntary self-regulation, written songs and arrangements that don’t fit the indie rock mold, temporarily shelved the rock mannerisms. It’s quite a gamble, but one that’s not too big because, like the Stones, the band’s high level of recognition comes from their singer’s voice.”
