Football world champion Mats Hummels has announced his end of his career for the coming summer. The 36-year-old announced this decision in an emotional video on social media. The long-time BVB professional Hummels has been playing for AS Rome in Italy since this season.

In summer it is over! Mats Hummels ended his professional career after this season. “I’m fighting with the emotions. Now the moment is around that no footballer can be. After over 18 years with so many things that football gave me, I end my career in summer,” said the 78-time international in a video that he divided into social media.

Hummels draws the line

He then gratefully looked back on his great career. “It is very easy to do the right trainers at the right moment. Be fit at the right moment, the right players at the right time.” He will miss the big stadiums and the fans like on the Dortmund south grandstand: “It was wonderful in front of such scenes to be able to play in front of the fans, and I will be missing, I will be missing.”

Hummels was six times German champion and four times DFB Cup winner with FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund. Most recently, the central defender played for AS Rome, but was no longer part of the regular formation. His contract with the Romans ends in summer. In 2014, he won the World Cup title in Brazil in the German national team jersey – his greatest success.

In the World Cup quarter-finals against France, he achieved the decisive 1-0. Previously, he had already hit Portugal to 2-0 in the 4-0 opening success against Portugal. The defensive man hit five times in 78 international matches.
