Status: 05.11.2022 23:12

The victory over UD Almeria and the lead in the table were secondary: At FC Barcelona everything revolved around the moving farewell to club legend Gerard Piqué.

The Spanish world and European champion surprisingly announced his imminent retirement from professional football on Thursday (November 3rd, 2022). The 2-0 (0-0) win against Almeria on Saturday evening was his last and turned into a celebration: Piqué was substituted in the 83rd minute, said goodbye to colleagues and competitors in tears, after the final whistle he did laps of honor and was enthusiastically celebrated .

“No other team after Barca

Even before the game, Piqué had informed his fans: “I’ve always said that there will be no other team after Barca. And there will be. I will be a normal fan. I will support the team. I will pass the love for Barca to my children. As it is mine parents did to me.”

Piqué was born in Barcelona and trained as a footballer with FC Barcelona. After stints at Manchester United and Real Zaragoza, he returned to Barça in 2008 and has since won the Champions League and the Spanish championship several times with the club. Most recently, however, he was hardly considered by coach Xavi.

Goals by Dembele and De Jong

Barcelona struggled for a long time in their farewell game before Ousmane Dembélé (48′) and Frenkie de Jong (62′) made things clear. Barcelona are now two points clear at the top of the table but Real Madrid can move past Rayo Vallecano with a win on Monday night.
