Mastodon of 4,500 tons must protect us against stormy weather

The storm surge barrier in the harbor channel of Nieuwpoort must ensure that in the event of a severe storm, the water does not overflow inland via the Yser. Cost: 58 million euros.

This gigantic concrete tub left Kalloo in the direction of Nieuwpoort. The construction, which will be placed in the fairway of Nieuwpoort, weighs 4570 tons, is over 42 meters long, 23 meters wide and five meters high.

The storm surge barrier is intended to protect Nieuwpoort against a 1000-year storm surge. The design takes into account a sea level rise of 80 centimeters by 2100.

The MDK agency started work in 2018. The project should be completed in 2025.
