In the last Masters 1000 of the season, the 20-year-old from Carrara got rid of veteran Marin Cilic (17 Atp) in two sets, winning with a score of 6-4 6-4, matured in an hour and 22 minutes of match . For the Italian n.23 in the world ranking, the next round will be one between the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (n.106) and the home player Quentin Halys (n.69).

The match

The Next Gen immediately put the Croatian under pressure, getting the first break point of the match in the opening game. A backhand in the net by Cilic allows Musetti to move forward in the score, with the blue that at the change of field is quick to consolidate the advantage in the service. At 2-1 the Croatian has a chance to try to shorten the distance but Musetti is good at holding the reins of the set by canceling two balls of the counterbreak. For the 23rd in the world there are convincing statistics at the service: 12/13 points scored with the first and the set that continues on the rhythm of the latter. When the time has come to confirm himself, Lorenzo makes no mistake: in the decisive game he raises the pace, confidently exhibits his varied tennis and takes the partial for 6-4. In the second half it is practically déjà-vu: a double foul followed by a bad backhand on the net by the Croatian lead Musetti to 1-0 and while Cilic appears increasingly subdued, the Italian is completely free to express himself by virtue of his advantage. Also in this portion of the match the service of the challengers dictates the pace, as well as the mental strength of Musetti, who just needs to manage the advantage to close with a double 6-4.
