Master race in Greece comes to a head: tricky stalemate in Athens

Three games before the end of the season

The head-to-head battle between Panathinaikos Athens and AEK Athens comes to a head in the Greek Super League championship round. In the next direct duel, the clubs drew 0-0 again at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium on Sunday, which means that the direct comparison that dominates in the Greek league still does not result in a clear leader.

With three games to go before the end of the season, both clubs have 76 points, which is why the rank would now be based on the results of both clubs’ matches from the regular season and the championship round. Here they separated before the two previous draws in the play-offs (twice 0-0) even in the regular season. AEK won the first leg 2-1, Panathinaikos the second leg 1-0. This means that the second criterion, the direct comparison of the goal difference, is also a tie. Currently, Panathinaikos is only ahead of AEK because of the third criterion: the better position after the regular season. Here AEK was behind Panathinaikos and will stay there in the play-offs for the time being, even if they are otherwise equal. Overall, AEK has a significantly better goal difference than their city rivals, who only overtook first place on the last matchday.

AEK next face Olympiacos Piraeus and in the last two rounds they face Aris Saloniki and Volos NPS. Panathinaikos take on PAOK Thessaloniki, Piraeus and Aris Thessaloniki (go to the Super League Play-Off fixture list).
