The darkest period now seems definitively behind us. The fear, the sleepless nights, the sense of guilt, all the thoughts about how that last October 28 Josep Martinez could have avoided the impact with the 81-year-old who died in the car accident involving the Inter goalkeeper near Appiano Gentile. “Pepo,” understandably, was very affected by the episode and everything that came with it. Saying that he has overcome the state of shock is perhaps premature, especially thinking back to those moments, but in recent weeks the Spaniard has worked hard with the team of psychologists made available by Inter to convince himself that he could hardly have done more to avoid the impact. The camp could come to the rescue tomorrow. Ownership in the Italian Cup match against Venezia to regain at least a little of that normality lost in the last abundant month.
At the Gran Gala del Calcio yesterday, Lautaro Martinez underlined the humanity of Cristian Chivu: “He’s great, he always embraces everyone”. And in recent weeks the Nerazzurri coach has certainly not failed to show his affection to the other Nerazzurri Martinez, Josep, during the most complex period not only of his career but probably of his entire life. The Inter coach tested Pepo’s psychological balance by simply showing his closeness to him and is now seriously considering whether to put him back on the pitch in tomorrow’s match against Venezia in the Italian Cup.

For his part, Josep Martinez concentrated fully on his work to overcome the complex moment, even more than usual. He tried to archive the episode, not to think about the ongoing road homicide investigation, the technical consultancy requested by the Como prosecutor Giulia Ometto, the autopsy which excluded the hypothesis that the 81-year-old’s death had been caused by an illness preceding the impact. He even closed his Instagram profile to avoid reading stupid or offensive comments, even by mistake. Pepo Martinez took refuge in goal, where he finally hopes to return tomorrow. Moreover, any ownership would represent another small step towards returning to normality. What experts, witnesses and prosecutors will say is another matter. Which Martinez will return to think about in due time.
