Singer-songwriter Martina Lucic from Landgraaf interviewed eight people who, like herself once, have fled to the Netherlands. She incorporated their stories into a record and a book under the title ‘The Untold Stories’.

Martina Lucic, also known by her stage name Mala, was four years old when she fled from Croatia to the Netherlands with her parents.

On her debut album, she sang about her family’s story. She received a lot of responses from people who also have a refugee background themselves. It gave her the idea to start a conversation with them, and to write new songs based on those conversations.

An intensive project, in which Mala also learned a lot about herself. “I realize how well I have it, and I am grateful to my parents that they came to the Netherlands for us, the children,” she told L1mburg Centraal.

The Untold Stories
Mala hopes with her project to create more mutual understanding. “We are all human, and we all want the same thing. To be happy and healthy.” The record and the book The Untold Stories will be presented on Friday 22 April in the Parkstad Limburg Theater in Heerlen.
