You can play quartets with it: Dutch celebrities who shout that they want to stop TV and open a beach bar somewhere. And when push comes to shove, they realize that it is hard work, and they are not used to that at all. Not to mention the salary drop. Below the line, they simply hang around the Mediapark for an endless period of time.

Hands in the air

Martijn Krabbé is also such a case. Was in the Isola di Beau program in November and suddenly put two hands in the air during a good conversation with Beau van Erven Dorens. The message? “Yes, I want to do something different and I thought: what should I do? And I still end up with the same thing every time and that is just spinning pictures.”

Huh, isn’t Martijn 55? Isn’t the occupation of the senior disco with Erland Galjaard and Ronald Molendijk perfectly fine? No, Martijn was totally into it. “With a dance floor. With all people standing with their hands in the air.”

Monica Geuze sat next to it and looked to see if she saw water burning.

Rather not

A few months later, Martijn has already parked his TV exit, a bit as predicted. “That just occurred to me. I don’t know if it was because of Beau, who I’ve been good friends with for years, the setting sun or the wine in front of me, but suddenly I thought: well, what are we going to do with our lives?

He continues in conversation with Veronica Superguide: “It all goes so fast. The 36 years I’ve been on TV have flown by. Of course, that doesn’t add another 36 years. You also think about your expiration date.”

Bit depressed

Martijn will now focus on TV again. He was not completely comfortable during the recording of Isola di Beau. “I didn’t like it all that much last year. It was a very tough year,” he says, referring to the riot about transgressive behavior at The Voice of Holland.

He continues: “It still bothers me. You start doubting everything. Also to yourself. At a certain point you think: if you didn’t see or know about this, shouldn’t you reset and think about how this could have happened?”

Philosophize

And what about those pictures he wants to play? “Last year I did think seriously about the question: is there anything else I would like to do? I still philosophize about shooting on location.”

He concludes: “Starting a restaurant, I’m too old for that now. That is hard work. I don’t see myself doing that anymore.”
