Finnish cross-country skier Jasmi Joensuu is divorcing her husband Juho Simonen. The 28-year-old announced the end of the marriage on Instagram.
It was the “worst week of my life,” Joensuu wrote about a photo that shows her and her husband snowboarding.
The cross-country skier explained: “We are no longer ourselves. Even on our last trip I knew that everything was not okay, and when we came home it was clear that we would go our separate ways.”
After a week of sleepless nights, Joensuu feels “absolutely terrible.” But the post was necessary “in order to be able to admit to myself what happened,” said the Finn.
The relay bronze medalist at the 2021 World Cup looked back on the beginnings of the relationship.
Cross-country skiing ace Joensuu “very sad” and “disappointed”
“A little over five years ago the ski championships brought me to Rovaniemi and by chance I met a wonderful man with whom I fell head over heels in love, with whom I experienced incredible things and who made it possible for me to… “To achieve bigger dreams,” said Joensuu: “Life outside of skiing was a lifeline for me, and my family made it possible. And I’m more than grateful for that.”
Joensuu is currently “very sad” and “disappointed”. She so openly admitted that she felt like she had lost a foundation in her life. “But damn, I’ll find that smile again and one day say that it was meant to be,” said the 28-year-old optimistically about the future.
Joensuu ends her statement by announcing that she does not want to comment further on the topic.
Jasmi Joensuu won the bronze medal with the Finnish relay team at the 2021 Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf. Her best result in the overall World Cup was 14th place in the 2023/2024 sprint ranking.
She finished 27th in the sprint at the 2022 Olympics.
