Marozsan farewell at the World Cup endurance test against Brazil

Status: 04/10/2023 2:10 p.m

One last time in the DFB jersey: An emotional farewell awaits Dzsenifer Marozsan against Brazil. For the rest of the team, on the other hand, it’s a real World Cup endurance test.

It is still unclear how Marozsan will continue after her last international match at club level: “Basically everything is still open. There are talks with Lyon, there are talks with other clubs”said the 30-year-old playmaker from Olympique Lyon in a video link on Sunday. She will say goodbye to South American champions Brazil this Tuesday (6 p.m., live on Erste and on sportschau.de) in Nuremberg.

After a cruciate ligament tear – Maroszan steps down

Marozsan is to wear the jersey of the German national team for the 112th and last time, with which she won the European Championship title in 2013 and the Olympic victory in 2016. A year ago she tore her cruciate ligament in the 2-3 draw in the World Cup qualifier in Serbia and missed the European Championship in England.

“Unfortunately, my knee isn’t what it was anymore. Even if I play all the sessions at the club, all the games. I have to do a lot to make it possible.”said the former Frankfurt resident. “It always tweaks. That’s only half the fun, I have to admit.”

Contract with Lyon expires

Marozsan’s contract with her French club, with which the native Hungarian has won the Champions League six times, expires at the end of the season. “She is one of the world’s best technicians, she has fantastic human character traits. We will continue to communicate privately,” said national coach Voss-Tecklenburg about the noble technician.

According to Marozsan, the game is over “Gift“: “I’m overjoyed that so many people are coming to the stadium. The team deserves it,” said Marozsan. “It’s an important game for the team, so I like to focus on the team.”

Still a number of problems for Voss-Tecklenburg

Despite the flattering success, there were still a number of problems in the Netherlands (1-0). A lot of work awaits “MVT” before the start of the title mission in Australia and New Zealand (July 20th to August 20th), the form of the previous year, when they thrilled an entire country, the runners-up European champions are still lagging behind. Perhaps the endurance test against Brazil comes at just the right time.

And yet the DFB women want to give Marozsan a dignified farewell. “She’s an incredible technician, she shaped German women’s football for decades, played sugar passes and scored important goals.”, enthused her good friend Svenja Huth. Marozsan going as “great person with a heart of gold” leave a gap.

curse at the World Championships

But the farewell also hurts athletically. In 2013, Marozsan won the European title, three years later Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro. In 2018, however, she suffered a bilateral pulmonary embolism, and the World Championships seemed cursed for “Maro”. She also missed the summer fairy tale of 2022 due to a cruciate ligament rupture – during this time the decision to resign was made in front of the television.

At the World Championships from July 20th to August 20th in Australia and New Zealand, the runners-up European champions will meet Morocco, Colombia and South Korea in the preliminary round. The Brazilians, who play in Nürnberg without their injured former world footballer Marta, could already be the opponents in the round of 16. Last week they lost the “Finalissima” against European champions England after a 1-1 draw on penalties.
