Markus Weinzierl before signing at 1899 Hoffenheim

According to a media report, Markus Weinzierl is said to be the favorite for the vacant coaching job at Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

The 47-year-old coach, who himself only announced his departure from league competitor FC Augsburg last weekend, is said to have been a guest at the Hoffenheim training ground in Zuzenhausen on Wednesday and shortly before stand for a signature.

Weinzierl had declared on the TV channel “Sky” that he would not be extending his contract, which was due to expire this summer. He not only looked after Augsburg in the Bundesliga, but also FC Schalke 04 and VfB Stuttgart. At TSG he would succeed Sebastian Hoeneß.

After the 5-1 defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach and the drop to ninth place in the table, the TSG management announced the separation from Hoeneß on Tuesday. The 40-year-old originally signed a contract until 2023.

After the season finale, four coaches had to vacate their positions – in addition to Hoeneß and Weinzierl, Adi Hütter (Borussia Mönchengladbach) and Florian Kohfeldt (VfL Wolfsburg).
