After five games without a win, 1860 Munich needs a turnaround. A new coach should bring them. But the front runner is waiting for the debut.

TSV 1860 Munich has responded to the sporting crisis and hired a new head coach. Markus Kauczinski is supposed to get the third division team back on track for promotion. The 55-year-old will take over the team from next Monday, as the club announced.

Kauczinski brings an experienced coaching team with him to Munich. Markus Brzenska and Nico Masetzky will work alongside him as assistant coaches. Philipp Kunz will take over the duties as athletic trainer, René Vollath will be goalkeeping coach.

“In my previous positions I was able to get to know the work in large, traditional clubs,” said Kauczinski. “I’m now really looking forward to the task at TSV 1860 Munich. When we start training together on Monday, it’s important to work out the team’s strengths and send them into the home game against MSV Duisburg full of self-confidence and well prepared.”

The new Lions coach has plenty of experience in the lower leagues. The Gelsenkirchen native began his coaching career in the youth ranks at FC Schalke 04 and then worked for Karlsruher SC for many years. There he initially looked after the youth teams and later took over the professionals. With KSC, Kauczinski became champions in the 3rd league in 2012/13 and narrowly failed to gain promotion to the Bundesliga in 2014/15 when HSV secured relegation in extra time in the relegation second leg.

After his stint at the Wildpark, Kauczinski, who was voted coach of the year by the DFB in 2015, looked after FC Ingolstadt 04, FC St. Pauli and Dynamo Dresden. With SV Wehen Wiesbaden he was promoted to the 2nd league in the relegation game against Arminia Bielefeld in 2022/23.

“I am very pleased that, after intensive coordination with both shareholders, we can present a new head coach who is recognized by everyone involved as the best person for TSV 1860 Munich,” said interim managing director Manfred Paula. “Markus has proven in the past that he has all the skills needed to work successfully with our team. We are pleased that he has decided to take on the role with the Lions and wish him every success.”

The situation at the traditional club is tense. After four defeats and one draw in the last five games, Kauczinski must end the crisis quickly if the gap to the promotion ranks is not to become too great. The Munich team is currently only in 13th place. His debut is on October 19th – and it’s against leaders Duisburg.
