DOW JONES–Europe’s stock markets are largely standing still on Monday afternoon. The DAX is barely changed at 20,903 points, while the Euro-Stoxx-50 is down 4 points to 5,145. After a good start to the US reporting season last week and relaxed inflation data from the USA, politics is now coming into focus. On Monday, Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the USA in Washington, and it feels like he has been at the helm for days.

The inauguration will be the focus of the media; Trump will only take his oath of office after trading closes in Europe. Then it will be exciting to see which of his announced decrees he will sign immediately and then give impetus to the capital markets on Tuesday. There will be no trading on Wall Street on Monday; it will be closed for the Martin Luther King memorial holiday.

Economists expect Trump to start by announcing tariff increases, tax cuts and restrictions on immigration to the US. This is likely to lead to rising inflation and interest rates in the US, says Augustine Faucher, chief economist at PNC Financial Services Group.

According to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the biggest movements are likely to occur mainly in the US dollar. While analysts expect him to sign dozens of executive orders on his first day in office, they see expectations of direct political consequences as too high. Therefore, the dollar is likely to weaken. At the beginning of the week, the euro appreciated to $1.0320. Bitcoin is now rising to over $108,000 and investors are betting on a crypto-friendly US government.

Hypoport with good figures

Hypoport rose by 9.1 percent – the company recorded a significant increase in business volume in the real estate segment in the fourth quarter. Formycon (+1.6%) can market its biosimilar to the eye drug Eylea in the European Union. As the TecDAX company announced, the EU Commission has granted approval for “FYB203” with the active ingredient aflibercept under the brand names “Ahzantive” and “Baiama”. After another order worth 330 million euros from the Bundeswehr Rheinmetall gains 0.6 percent for the delivery of logistics vehicles.

The Spanish telecommunications group Telefonica (-2.8%) surprisingly changes its leadership. Catalan businessman Marc Murtra has been elected as Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete’s successor. “The decision has been taken in view of Telefonica’s new shareholder structure and the fact that some of the relevant shareholders have expressed the desire to initiate a new phase in the leadership of the board,” the company said.

After the unexpected death of CEO Klemens Haselsteiner, the Strabag share price in Vienna fell by 1.2 percent.

The news from companies is thin, but analysts were active over the weekend. The researchers at UBS have raised the price target of DAX heavyweight Siemens to 240 euros, the share is trading 0.3 percent higher. Siemens Energy’s shares, on the other hand, are trading 3.2 percent lower after UBS lowered the vote to “sell” and the price target of 23 euros is well below the current price level.
