Market values Portugal: Benfica regain top spot from champions Porto – Biggest plus for Ramos

interim update

Transfermarkt.pt has subjected the market values of the Portuguese league to an interim update after the first few weeks of the 2022/23 season, revaluing 92 players in the process. After the convincing start with coach Roger Schmidt, the focus was particularly on the pros from leaders Benfica Lisbon.

The “Adler” won all twelve games across all competitions at the start of the new season and consequently recorded a big plus in terms of squad value. The record champions have increased by a total of EUR 21.5 million and, with EUR 260.3 million, have now regained first place from current title holders FC Porto (+ EUR 11.3 million to EUR 256.5 million).

Attacker Gonçalo Ramos, who seems to have made the final breakthrough this year after a decent last season, is going up. With four goals and two assists in four qualifying games, the 21-year-old played a major role in reaching the group stage of the Champions League. After March and May, the Portuguese U21 international from his youth team receives the third upgrade this year and jumps from 14 million to 20 million euros – the biggest plus in the league.

Benfica’s showpiece so far this season is undoubtedly the defensive. The Schmidt team conceded just six goals in their first twelve games and kept seven clean sheets. An up-and-coming talent recently established itself in the back four in António Silva. “The central defender won the Youth League with the U19s last season, played the full distance in all ten games and was therefore one of the guarantors of success. At 18, Silva already exudes a great deal of calm and seems very confident in his actions. Fans and coaches are delighted with his performances so far,” explains Marcel de Almeida, Area Manager Portugal.

For Silva, who only received his starting value a year ago, it goes up from 300,000 to 4 million euros. Other upgrades include sideman Morato (21; +5 to €15m), right-back Gilberto (29; +1 to €6m) and central midfielder Florentino. The 23-year-old homegrown player seems to be regaining its former strength after two rather unfortunate loans to Monaco and Getafe.

“In Roger Schmidt he finally has a coach who relies on him. Florentino is currently an integral part of the starting XI. If he can call on these services over a longer period of time, he could regain his old market value,” said de Almeida. In 2019, the right foot was valued at 20 million euros, now it’s going up from 5 to 8 million euros.

Aside from the team of the hour, the market values of the respective high-flyers are also being raised at FC Porto and Sporting Lisbon, both of which were only signed this summer. That applies to David Carmo in the Dragões. The 23-year-old central defender came to Porto from SC Braga for 20 million plus 2.5 million euros in bonuses and impressed from the start with a good tackle rate and a strong opening of the game. At EUR 20 million (+ EUR 5 million), his new market value is now at the level of the basic fee.

At Sporting, Marcus Edwards recently attracted attention, especially in the Champions League. The Englishman came for €7.5m from Vitória Guimarães SC, who joined Tottenham on a free transfer in 2019. “Edwards is currently the best player at Sporting and if he continues like this, the Premier League clubs will certainly bring him back to the island for a lot of money,” de Almeida is sure. From 15 million to 20 million euros, he is now one of the five most valuable Englishmen abroad.

This is how the Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are created taking into account various pricing models and a strong involvement of the Transfermarkt community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values are not to be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.

The goal is not to predict a price, but an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational framework conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
