In 2008, Mark Webster became darts world champion and has been working as a TV expert for years. Now he has to stop working because he is seriously ill.
Former darts world champion Mark Webster has a rare form of blood cancer – hairy cell leukemia. The 42-year-old Welshman announced this in an interview with the “Darts World” portal. The diagnosis was made in January. Webster announced that he would undergo chemotherapy.
But the ex-professional is confident, saying: “It sounds bad when you say leukemia, but the prognosis is good, 95 percent of cases are treated successfully.” Before the diagnosis, he felt “exhausted” and became “very tired,” Webster reported.
After his active career, the left-hander worked as a TV expert, including at the World Cup. All activities have been suspended since February. But he wants to go back to the microphone. Webster said: “I feel good and would like to go back to work, but my medical team doesn’t like the environment I work in.”
Webster won the world title in 2008 with the British Darts Organization (BDO), which is now insolvent. In 2010, he reached the World Cup semi-finals on the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) tour – where he lost to Phil Taylor. Webster ended his career in 2019.
