Marius Müller-Westernhagen: “The one life” (criticism & stream)

“God damn pandemic!” curses Westernhagen, who misses traveling and solidarity. “I want out of here” is a stubborn cabin fever protocol – and the appropriate opening of a late work charged with defiance, in which the 73-year-old thinks a lot about getting older, but is still in the here and now, gorging on botox, the Kardashians, the greed of the world erupts.

Musically, however, “Das Eine Leben” is a value-conservative record inspired by blues rock. And Westernhagen is at its best when he keeps the promise “at 18” and sings “not pretty, but cool and loud”.

In “I want out of here”, “Zeitgeist” or “Snow from yesterday” he succeeds quite well. On the other hand, when he intones ballads like “The Truth” or “Farewell Song” with pathetic tremolo, it’s hard to bear.

Luckily, the actual farewell song reconciles you in the end: With “If we look back over the mountain”, a honkytonk singalong in three-four time, Westernhagen gives the pandemic a kick in the butt.
