The district court of North Karelia has sentenced pop singer Marita Taavitsainen, 57, for endangering traffic safety.

The crime took place in Kitee on February 22. Taavitsainen reached a speed of 109 kilometers per hour on Kuutostie, even though the limit was 80 kilometers per hour.

In the prosecutor’s opinion, Taavitsainen’s driving was capable of causing a danger to the safety of others, because the situation happened at dark on a public road where there has been other traffic.

Taavitsainen admitted that he was speeding, but denied the measured maximum speed. He considered that he drove at most 89 kilometers per hour.

In addition, Taavitsainen denied that he had endangered other traffic, because there was hardly any – only one car had come. The crash happened in the morning, when Taavitsainen was driving home from a gig.

– An empty road and a clean one at that, Taavitsainen commented to Iltalehte at the beginning of the week.

The District Court of North Karelia considered the indictment on Thursday, November 6 and announced the verdict in the case at the end of the session.

Taavitsainen was sentenced to a fine. 14 daily fines make his income 448 euros.

The judgment is not binding.

Taavitsainen, who was crowned tango queen in 1995, is remembered for her songs, among other things Andrew, When you touch me and Take it close to you.
