Mario Götze’s contract with Eintracht Frankfurt is valid until the summer. Recently he didn’t even make it into the squad. What’s next for him?
World champion Mario Götze has extended his contract with Eintracht Frankfurt for another two years. The Hessians announced this on Wednesday. Götze’s contract would originally have expired in the summer. “Eintracht Frankfurt means a lot to me. I’ve been here for almost four years and have had a great time so far,” Götze is quoted as saying in a press release. “My family and I feel very comfortable in Frankfurt. Many factors play a role in my current career phase – I know that a football career is finite.”
He and his wife Ann-Kathrin have two children: son Rome and daughter Gioia. The Götze family lives in Frankfurt, Mario apparently wanted to avoid another move to Dortmund, Munich and Eindhoven. This suited Eintracht, as there are few players with experience in the young and talented Frankfurt squad.

Mario Götze is a welcome balance, emphasized sports director Markus Krösche. “Mario is a very important player and an equally important personality for the team and the club,” explained Krösche and added: “He has experienced almost everything in his professional career, gone through ups and downs and thus gained a wealth of experience that he would now like to share with the many young players in our club.”
What could have shaken the contract extension a bit was Götze’s importance for coach Albert Riera. The Spaniard, who has been in office in Frankfurt since January, did without the 33-year-old in the last Bundesliga game in Mainz and opted for 20 other names.
“If I could take 21 players with me, he would be there,” emphasized Riera. The Spaniard also knows about Götze’s value for the club. The 2014 DFB world champion has already played 148 competitive games for Eintracht. Götze also has a goal for the next two years: “Who knows what will be possible in the near future. I would really like winning the cup again, for example.”
