Peter van der Vorst, the almighty boss of RTL 4, thinks that his channel star Marieke Elsinga is being treated too harshly. “The ferocity of the response is remarkable.”
It is widely astonishing that Marieke Elsinga is so badly guided during her first steps as a solo presenter. She was put on a terrible TV monstrosity, Alles is Muziek, and even after seeing the montage, Peter van der Vorst gave the green light to broadcast this on national television. Her reputation has been badly damaged.
Failing Marieke
Yet Peter does not point to himself, but to Marieke’s critics. “Everything is Music we got presented. Then you think: okay, there’s something in that. But yes, then you make it, run it and then you get the editing and you think: well, okay, it didn’t turn out the way we hoped. That’s how it is,” he says Coffee time.
Why didn’t it work? “Well, there are many explanations for this. Those are all evaluations. A lot of opinions have already been given about it. Don’t let me get involved in that circle of opinions. We evaluate that neatly internally, together with the makers.”
fierceness
Peter chose to throw it on the tube anyway: fodder for critics. “What I do find remarkable is the ferocity with which people react when something doesn’t work. I still think that, what I just said about Twitter: pfoe, that hardening in society… You want clickbaitso a really strong opinion has to be given.”
He continues: “People are treated really personally. Guys, we make television and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. That’s it. We are one of the few channels that brings a lot of new titles.”
Twitter sewer
The harshest opinions about celebrities are expressed on Twitter. Peter never returns there. “It’s a very direct way of interacting with viewers. It also all started very friendly, Twitter, but it quickly derailed and became a kind of sewer full of hard opinions where people are also destroyed.”
He continues: “When I got this job, I was like, you know what? I don’t think it’s really appropriate for me to do that in this role. It wasn’t imposed on me, but I thought so myself, so I stopped. And that was a wonderful feeling, to be honest.”
Mind industry
Peter is getting a little tired of it all. “I don’t participate in that whole opinion industry anymore, to be honest. That has almost become a revenue model, eh, for a lot of people, that hardening in society.”
Hard opinions as a revenue model… After the past four weeks, there are at least two RTL Boulevard viewers who think that Peter should really put his hand in his own bosom in this regard: Cornald Maas and Duncan Laurence.
