Mariano Díaz wants to leave Real Madrid: “If there is an option”

1,762 minutes of play since 2018

Schalke 04 2019, Benfica Lisbon 2020 and FC Valencia 2021 – there hasn’t been a summer in recent years in which Mariano Díaz didn’t have the option to leave Real Madrid. The transfer failed but always. The 28-year-old striker has only played 1,762 minutes in all competitions since his return to Madrid for 21.5 million euros from Lyon in the summer of 2018, also due to injury. It seems logical that he would like to be on the field more often. According to advisor David Aranda, however, not all potential buyers are suitable for Díaz.

“The player’s intention, as it has been for the last three years, is to leave – if there is an option that he is happy with. And that’s the situation we’re in, we’re looking for a club that he likes,” Aranda said atbernabeudigital.com‘ (quoted via ‘realtotal.de“). “He pays attention to many aspects, sometimes one has more influence and sometimes the other. At the moment he has an ongoing contract and if a better club comes along then he will leave and if not then not.

Díaz’ working paper at Real is still valid until 2023, so next summer he could switch for free, but with a corresponding bonus. The Spanish champions, on the other hand, have what is likely to be their last chance this summer to collect a reasonable transfer fee for the attacker, who joined the club’s U19s in 2011 and has always played for Los Merengues with the exception of one year in Lyon. Díaz’s market value has been in a nosedive for years because of his low stakes. Before his return, he was valued at 22 million euros – since then many cuts have followed, today he stands at 6 million.

Real Madrid expert: Díaz agent’s statements “far from reality”

Finding something that the player “likes” is, according to Aranda, “not easy”. It’s not necessarily about the money: “Because he earns more money anywhere else. If he leaves, he’ll earn more, that’s for sure. Mariano has some perspectives, ambitions. We’ll see how the film ends. At the moment I don’t know what will happen.”

Nils Kern, editor-in-chief of “realtotal.de”, classified the statements on Twitter as “remote from reality”.. “I appreciate Mariano. When he plays, nobody puts in more effort (he tends to TOO much). But the fact that things didn’t work out with Valencia, Benfica and Co. is primarily due to him because he’s doing too well. Then such arrogant statements, which responsible club wants to get something like that into the club?
