Marge from The Simpsons cuts her hair: Solidarity with Iranian women

Street artist AleXsandro Palombo immortalized Marge Simpson again a few days ago on a building wall in front of the Iranian consulate in Milan. His first work, in which Marge Simpson was supposed to express solidarity with Iranian women, was removed after less than 24 hours. The follow-up artwork “The Cut 2” again features Marge Simpson with her hair cut off, but this time with an angry look and middle finger. In line with the current protests for women’s rights in Iran, artist Palombo once again shows solidarity with Iranian women in his work.

Countless women cut their hair and film themselves doing it

Since the violent death of Mahsa Amini at the hands of the Iranian vice squad, countless women have cut their hair as a form of protest. Countless videos are circulating online showing women cutting their hair.

In his art, Palombo repeatedly deals with stereotypical role models, women’s rights and social structures.

Marge Simpson first sad, now angry

A few weeks ago, the artist had immortalized the character Marge Simpson on the wall of the Iranian consulate with a sad look and her hair cut off. However, his work The Cut 1 was removed in less than 24 hours. The work’s censorship has led to much debate about artistic freedom. In the second attempt, and in response to the censorship of his previous political artwork, Marge’s facial expression has changed from sad to angry in The Cut 2.

Why Marge Simpson?

Since 2012, the Iranian government has banned the broadcast and promotion of the animated series “The Simpsons” because, according to the government, the series “is intended to negatively influence the moral values of young people.”

Artist Palombo has not used Marge’s stereotypical role from the TV series 2022 for the first time in his art: Palombo already used Marge Simpson in his art series “Style Icon Marge Simpson” in 2013 – here to see Marge in various milestones in fashion history to wear. Among other things, Marge wears the famous cone corset by Jean Paul Gaultier, in which Madonna appeared in 1990 as part of her “Blond Ambition” tour.
