After a long illness, Marco Cacciatori, the symbolic man of Carrarese and the unsurpassed top striker of the team of the city where he was born, has died at the age of 68 with 65 goals scored with that shirt over the course of his career. His name is also associated with another historic achievement, that of Perugia unbeaten with Ilario Castagner on the bench and second in the league behind Milan (1978-1979 season), with the goal scored against Inter in October 46 years ago ( scored the 1-1 at the end), of the transfer to Vicenza because Paolo Rossi (who was not yet Pablito) would take his place in the Umbrian shirt.

career

He made his debut in Serie D at a very young age with Carrarese and led them to promotion to C2, scoring 25 goals in 34 games. Skilled with his head and relentless in his left-footed shot, he earned the attention of Perugia and achieved a triple leap from the third series to the top Italian tournament.

the disease

Shortly after moving to Vicenza, he fell ill in training and discovered, following tests, that he had a tumor in his testicle. He remained out of action for three years and returned to the field in the 1983-1984 season, still among the ranks of the Carrarese team which had been a springboard for him and in which – albeit in three different moments – he scored the absolute record for goals (65 ) in the club’s history. Reggiana, Montevarchi, Pistoiese, Sarzanese and Pietrasanta were the other teams whose colors he wore until the age of 35, when he hung up his boots.
