Mané shoots Senegal to title – thriller on penalties against Egypt

In an exciting final, the team led by Liverpool star Sadio Mané prevails against Egypt. The decision is only made from the point – it will be dramatic.

Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations 2022. In the final in Yaounde, Cameroon, the team only beat Egypt 4-2 on penalties. The score was 0-0 after regulation time and extra time. It is the first title for the country.

After losing two finals in 2002 and 2019, the team around top star Sadio Mané defeated the record winner (7 titles) on penalties, although Bouna Sarr from the German record champions Bayern Munich failed from the point. Mané from Liverpool converted the decisive penalty. Egypt and superstar Mohamed Salah have to wait for their first triumph since 2010.

Mané became a hero in the end, despite being denied a penalty by strong Egyptian goalkeeper Gabaski in the seventh minute, watched by FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Overall it was a tough final. Egypt struggled after three overtime games in previous games. Senegal dominated the game, but failed again and again to Gabaski.

Hosts Cameroon secured third place on Saturday after beating Burkina Faso 5-3 on penalties. In regular time, Cameroon had turned a 0:3 deficit into a 3:3 (0:2).
