“My mother called me, she was worried. I told her not to worry. At least for the moment.” Thus Roberto Mancini, former European champion Italian coach and now, after his stint at the helm of Saudi Arabia, on the bench of the Qatari team Al Sadd. Mancini again: “There is an immense deployment of forces here in the Gulf, we were afraid that something would happen. We hoped that diplomacy could ease the tension. Now let’s hope for the best.”

After the attacks on Iran by Israel and the US, Tehran responded by striking the countries in the area where there are US military bases. One of these is Qatar. The former Italian coach, European champion with Italy in 2021, said again: “The alarm on my cell phone started ringing, the writing was in Arabic. Five or six messages arrived. Shortly after the explosions started. We were at mass, the alerts arrived while we were in church. They said to go home immediately and not to move from there.” In short, Mancini found himself in the middle of the Iranian attack, between exploding missiles and people screaming. On Instagram he shared a video in which he showed the attack and the explosions with the writing Qatar close to Doha: “It’s one of the explosions I heard from home.”
