The most expensive goalkeeper transfer since the respective record deals of Alisson and Kepa Arrizabalaga in the 2018/19 season is perfect: As expected, André Onana is moving from Inter Milan to Manchester United, where he has signed a contract until 2028 with an option for another year. The “Red Devils” announced the commitment of the 27-year-old Cameroonian on Thursday evening. Onana’s basic transfer fee is 52.5 million euros, around 400,000 less than the third most expensive keeper in football history, Gianluigi Buffon, in the summer of 2001. With bonuses of over 5 million euros, he can still overtake the old champion, who held the record for 17 years.
For Inter, selling the former Barça boy at this price is also very lucrative because the money is needed to further strengthen the attack following the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Edin Dzeko. “Otherwise they would certainly have preferred to keep him,” says Jatin Dietl, Area Manager Italy at Transfermarkt. He highlights Onana’s strengths in the ex-Ajax pro’s responsiveness and speed. “Because he’s also good with his foot, he can initiate actions from his own penalty area and serve his teammates with precise long shots,” said Dietl’s assessment of the Nerazzurri’s crowd favourite.
The fact that Inter had even been able to bring Onana on a free transfer in 2022 also puts the goalkeeper high in the ranking of players who were able to generate the largest transfer profit. 52.5 million euros is the second largest difference ever after a previously free transfer. Onana also overtakes ex-Bayern star Robert Lewandowski.
