Left-back Tyrell Malacia played two games in the current Premier League season. The nine-time Dutch international recently returned after a break of almost a year and a half and a difficult meniscus injury, but does not play a role in Manchester United’s plans, at least in the short term. According to a report by the magazine “Voetbal International”, the Red Devils informed the former 15 million euro purchase on Friday that he could move on loan in the winter transfer window.
The professional, who trained at Feyenoord Rotterdam, was brought to Old Trafford by compatriot Erik ten Hag in 2022 and impressed in his debut season before the knee injury sidelined him in the summer of 2023. Malacia had to undergo another operation a few weeks after the first procedure because small cartilage fragments around the meniscus had caused problems.
“I basically had to start my rehab all over again,” he said in a recent interview with the portal “The Athletic,” looking back on his suffering and adding: “I think everything in life has already been written for me. I had to go through this whole process to get to where I am now, so I wouldn’t do anything else. There were times when I thought, ‘I’m getting tired of this.’ However, I didn’t give up. That’s not my style. We’re not like that in my family.”

Malacia’s contract with United runs until 2026, and several top European clubs are said to be interested in the defender’s services. At the end of last year, the 25-year-old was also linked to Borussia Dortmund. According to reports, Malacia was motivated to accept the United bosses’ explanation and is striving to get back to form in the second half of the season with regular playing time at a loan club.
