United wins against Brighton
Cristiano Ronaldo has saved English record champions Manchester United with coach Ralf Rangnick from another setback and scored his first goal since December. The Portuguese scored the lead in the 2-0 (0-0) win against Brighton Hove & Albion, breaking his run of six competitive games without a goal – the longest since the 2008/09 season. Bruno Fernandes made everything clear in added time (90+7).
Ronaldo’s longest goalless streak since his first Ballon d’Or in 2008
“A great goal,” said Rangnick (quoted via “Guardians”) after the final whistle on just the third goal Ronaldo scored under him. “It was definitely his best performance in the last few weeks. Not only because of the lead, but also because he always tried to help his team-mates.”
This put Man United in fourth place in the battle for a place in the Champions League. Brighton, long an uncomfortable opponent, had to cope with the red card for Lewis Dunk shortly after the goal for an emergency brake (54th). The Rangnick team had not won twice in the league recently and allowed themselves an embarrassing FA Cup defeat against Middlesbrough FC.
