Last construction site in Guardiola’s team
If there’s one position Manchester City can’t play to the full, it’s that of left-back. Coach Pep Guardiola was able to close the gap in the storm center with Erling Haaland (21) for a fee of 60 million euros, for the left-back the “Citizens” want according to “The AthleticBring Marc Cucurella (23) from Brighton & Hove Albion – and this transfer could be as expensive as Haaland’s if the “Seagulls” have their way.
Brighton sat down at the negotiating table with a demand of 50 million pounds (around 58 million euros). Arsenal found out last summer in a transfer poker game involving Ben White (24) that the club from the south of England is not to be trifled with when it comes to transfers. Brighton didn’t budge and the Gunners ended up paying €58.5m for their dream player.

The Athletic are certain Man City won’t be willing to go to extremes and Brighton know that too. Both clubs should be willing to negotiate, especially since the “Seagulls” would even post a large transfer profit with a significantly lower transfer fee. Cucurella moved from Getafe FC to the island for €18m in 2021, where he has since increased his market value to €28m. In addition to Man City, Chelsea are said to be interested in the Spaniard’s services.
Left-back position at Manchester City: Is Cucurella coming and Zinchenko going?
However, FC Barcelona’s homegrown talent is particularly fond of the idea of moving to Man City, where Cucurella currently only has to take on Oleksandr Zinchenko (25) in the position of left-back. The Ukrainian was retrained by Guardiola and actually prefers to play in central midfield, just like in the national team. In addition, Zinchenko, along with Raheem Sterling (27) and Gabriel Jesus (25), is one of the candidates for sale at the English champions.
In February, Cucurella told journalist Gerard Romero that a return to Barcelona would also appeal to him: “When I left Barça, I had a little thorn in my side. They didn’t give me the chance and never explained why. If I had the opportunity to return, it would be something special, I would get rid of this thorn.” Cucurella only played seven minutes for Barça’s first team – he expects a move to Manchester and working with Guardiola to be the next step to go in its development.
