Manchester City are serious about courting River Plate’s Julián Álvarez

Barco should come as an offensive substitute

Manchester City are serious about wooing top talent Julián Álvarez from CA River Plate, according to Argentinian media reports. Some even go so far as to say that the 21-year-old striker is about to be transferred to the Citizens. However, a few points still need to be clarified.

Goals & highlights from River Plate forward Julián Álvarez

According to the broadcaster “TyC SportsMan City even made two offers for Álvarez. One for an immediate change in January, one for the coming summer. In the former case, a loan deal to another European club or to River Plate is planned to give Álvarez more minutes and experience before joining Pep Guardiola’s side.

However, neither of the two offers should fulfill the €20 million exit clause that is anchored in Álvarez’s contract with the Argentine champions, which is still valid until the end of 2022. However, the sum is high enough to interest River Plate in a sale. Also the newspaperOlé‘ reports on this and adds that a resale participation would probably also be part of the deal.

Manchester City just one of many top clubs in the courtship for Álvarez

At River Plate, the storm talent became a national team player last year and was particularly impressive with his high goal rate. With 18 goals (nine assists) in 21 games, Álvarez secured the title of top scorer in the Liga Profesional. The list of interested parties got longer and longer accordingly: In addition to Man City, Real Madrid, the Milan clubs AC and Inter, Juventus Turin, Germany’s BVB, FC Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen as well as Ajax Amsterdam were previously associated with the attacker.

River Plate had raised hopes of being able to extend Álvarez’s contract if they stayed. Otherwise, the youngster could freely negotiate a transfer with any club from summer onwards without informing his current club. According to Olé, the clause in the contract stating that the fixed transfer fee should increase by EUR 5 million ten days before the end of the transfer does not refer to the European transfer window, but to the domestic one. Since, according to FIFA, this in Argentina will not close until February 19, the clause is irrelevant in the current case.

Meanwhile, River Plate is already strengthening its offensive. Juan Fernando Quintero (29) is returning to the “Millonarios” from Shenzhen FC in China after a year. River Plate is also in talks with Atlanta United FC to bring Ezequiel Barco back to Argentina. The 22-year-old switched from Club Atlético Independiente to the MLS in early 2018 for around 12.3 million euros, as the most expensive player at the time and the first transfer beyond the 10 million mark. A loan move could be finalized before the end of the week.
