A 40-year-old man from Den Bosch was sentenced to twelve years in prison on Tuesday for trying to shoot dead his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend in the woman’s bedroom. Because the firearm refused, the victim managed to escape death.

The man found out in early May that his ex-girlfriend, with whom he had been together for thirteen years, had a new boyfriend. In the days that followed, he sent several text messages and audio clips threatening to kill the man.

Pulled the trigger twice
Not long after, he asked his stepdaughter if the new boyfriend was at his ex’s house in Rosmalen. He then let himself in with a borrowed key.

The man ran to the bedroom, pointed a gun at the 36-year-old victim’s head and pulled the trigger twice. The weapon misfired, meaning no bullet was fired. Then the man from Den Bosch ran away.

At the court in Den Bosch, the man stated that he only wanted to frighten his ex’s new boyfriend and that the weapon was unloaded. According to the suspect, his confession in a tapped telephone conversation with his stepbrother later that evening would have been boastful.

According to the court, this is completely unbelievable and all the evidence shows that he really intended to kill his ex’s friend. He was convicted of attempted murder, threats, trespassing, prohibited possession of firearms and assault.

More violent crimes
The man has previously been convicted of, among other things, violent crimes and was still on probation for a previous conviction.

The court imposed a heavier sentence than the ten years that the public prosecutor had previously demanded.
