A man who lives on a piece of no -man’s land along the A58 remains there despite the seizure of his forty animals. The municipality of Tilburg told Omroep Brabant. According to the municipality, it is ‘the best for both parties if the man continues to live at his current location’, although, according to the National Inspectorate Animal Welfare (member), it must now be without animals.

Almost two weeks ago, the member seized forty neglected animals on a site in Berkel-Enschot. For example, dogs were under the fleas, the animals were lean according to the police and there was everything on the site where they could hurt themselves.

There were a total of nine pigs, two hanging belly pigs, a lama, three donkeys, seven horses and eighteen dogs.

Better for both
The man has been living on his own created camp next to the A58, between Tilburg and Berkel-Enschot for eight years. “This gentleman has built up his life here and wants nothing else,” says a spokesperson for the municipality of Tilburg.

After the seizure of the animals, the municipality sees no reason to send the man away. In fact, both for him and for the municipality it is better if he continues to live at his camp, the municipality believes.

“We know where he is and we can keep a close eye on him. In this way we can easily put him in contact with the care that is best for him. Moreover, he is no one to be a burden here. That is why we tolerate this situation,” says a spokesperson.

Worry
According to the member, the man has been doing structurally for years. The inspection points to problems with the nutrition of the animals, their accommodation and the absence of medical care. There is no question of abuse, but the situation has been seen as worrying by authorities for a long time.

In the past, various measures have been taken, ranging from warnings and official reports to the seizure of animals. Yet the man managed to buy new animals over and over again, so that supervisors were confronted with the same problems time and time again.

Prohibition
Until about two weeks ago, when the animals were seized. Whether the man ever sees his animals is now with the judiciary. The Public Prosecution Service investigates the case and determines which follow -up steps will follow.

In 2023, the Parliament agreed to a change in the law, which means that a ban on keeping animals can be loosened since last year, up to a maximum of thirty years.

Omroep Brabant has approached the man, but he says he is too sad to talk about the situation.
