Man (37) jailed for years after crazy ride through town

Reiniere E. (37) has to pay for a crazy ride through Tilburg with five years in prison. The court in Breda ruled this on Tuesday. In addition, the man from Middelburg has lost his driver’s license for six years.

Fleeing from the police is never smart, but Reiniere E. made a very dangerous mad dash last October. He drove through Tilburg at high speed and when he encountered roadworks on the Goirksestraat, he chose to continue on the cycle path.

At at least 80 kilometers per hour, E. crashed onto the cycle path at Goirkestraat. At least seven people cycled there or walked on the sidewalk. After 300 meters, E. was looking at his phone while racing, hit a thick tree and fell over. He tried to run away, but was quickly arrested by the officers who were already chasing him.

This is how ER sped along the bike path and this is what his car looked like after the crash:

E. was convicted on Tuesday of attempted manslaughter of two people. And that is not surprising. An elderly man was just able to jump off his bicycle and press himself against the facade to prevent worse. E. still hit his bicycle. A young man jumped off his bike and was so shocked that he subsequently botched his driving test.

E. was also convicted of driving under the influence of cannabis and vandalizing someone else’s vehicle. It appeared that he had stolen the car elsewhere in Tilburg that night, but the court did not find enough evidence for this, despite footprints and telephone records.

Not that impressed
Reiniere E. himself was not very impressed with his driving behavior, as became apparent during the hearing. “I didn’t give it any extra gas, I had the hazard lights on and there was enough space,” he explained. He didn’t seem to have much awareness that riding on a cycle path at 80 kilometers per hour is very dangerous.

E. was stopped shortly before on the Besterdring, when officers saw him making a phone call in the car. The ‘borrowed’ car also turned out to be stolen and E. did not have a driver’s license. He had also smoked recently.

More time in the cell than outside
Reiniere E. has now built up an impressive criminal record of 18 pages. The judge calculated that since he came to live in the Netherlands from Bonaire in 2000, he has spent more time in jail than outside.

E. makes its own laws, as a psychologist noted. He is anti-social, has poor development and cannot take care of himself. Remarkably, he functions best in a prison regime with a clear structure.

During the hearing, the public prosecutor had demanded that E. be treated for his personality disorder. That is why she also demanded TBS, but the court did not impose that. The court did give a higher prison sentence of five years than the three years demanded.
