Man (33) drowns in recreational lake: fifth victim in a week

A 33-year-old Algerian man drowned in a recreational lake in Helmond on Tuesday afternoon. This is reported by the police. The man, who had no permanent place of residence or residence, was swimming in recreational lake Berkendonk on Raktweg when he got into trouble. An investigation shows that he died from drowning.

Bystanders called the emergency services. Rescuers and visitors searched for the man in the water. Eventually they managed to get him out of the water, the man turned out to be dead.

A trauma helicopter arrived on the scene, as did the fire brigade and two ambulances. Police cordoned off part of the beach to investigate.

Drowning in open water
The man is already the fifth victim to die in open water in the past week. Last week a 6-year-old boy died in the Lithse Ham in Lith. A 54-year-old man died while swimming in the E3 beach. A man died on Monday when he wanted to save his dog from the Maas and a man (87) drowned in a recreational lake in Elsendorp.

Every year, about a hundred people drown in open water in the Netherlands.
