At least 34 students were inside the school when the man tried to break in. The entrance doors to the building were closed for security reasons.
The victim has been identified as Robert Tyler White (32). He also allegedly wanted to break into a police car and was approached about this by a school employee. A discussion ensued and reinforcements were called in. White allegedly tried to take a weapon and was shot dead. It is unclear whether he himself was armed.
White was “depressed and suicidal,” his brother says. The man suspects that his brother deliberately threatened to be shot dead by the police. Suicide by cop, this phenomenon is called. According to USA Today, the children present at the school did not notice any of the commotion.
In late May, an 18-year-old opened fire at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. The gunman then holed up in a classroom and killed 19 children and two teachers before being shot dead by police.
