Man (26) arrested for placing a hand grenade near a festival in Purmerend

The police have arrested a 26-year-old man from Edam-Volendam for placing a hand grenade at the fence of a festival site in the Leeghwaterpark on Saturday evening. The Electronic Picnic Festival was going on there at the time.

The police report that they were alerted on Saturday evening about an explosive device on a fence near the festival. It turned out to be a hand grenade. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service then secured and removed the grenade.

That same night, the police arrested a suspect: a 26-year-old man from Edam-Volendam. That happened in his house. Police are now investigating the man’s motive for placing a hand grenade at the festival.

‘Had nothing to do with the festival’

The organization previously responded to the incident as follows: “At the beginning of the evening, one of our security guards found a suspicious object outside the festival site. We immediately cordoned off this area and informed the authorities. They reacted alertly and thanks to good cooperation, the object was secured and our festival could continue as usual. We now know that this had nothing to do with the festival.”
