Three months after cancer: Bayern player back

Bayern player Maria Luisa Grohs was sidelined after suffering from a tumor. Now the Bayern player is back again.
Goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs celebrated her emotional comeback for FC Bayern Munich in the friendly against BSC YB Frauen (7-0). The 23-year-old came on as a substitute in the second half and was back on the pitch just three months after her tumor illness.
The goalkeeper’s return brought great joy among her teammates. National player Lena Oberdorf, who was a co-commentator during the game, was thrilled: “We are all happy about her being back on the pitch so quickly and standing there between the posts.” The 22-year-old also praised Grohs’ character: “She has a super strong personality. You can really see ‘Mala’ as a role model.”
Grohs was diagnosed with a tumor in October. FC Bayern made the diagnosis public in November. After a successful operation, the young goalkeeper showed rapid progress in her recovery. Shortly before Christmas it was reported that she was on the right track. At the beginning of winter preparation, Grohs took part in team training again.
She played her last competitive game in the Champions League against Valerenga Oslo at the beginning of November. Now, just over three months later, she took the next big step back into professional football.
After the winter break, Bayern will start the second half of the women’s Bundesliga on February 2nd. As second in the table, the Munich team travel to RB Leipzig.
The title fight is getting more intense this season than it has been for a long time. The current league leader is Eintracht Frankfurt, who have a better goal difference than defending champions Bayern with the same number of points. Record champions VfL Wolfsburg and former DFB star Alexandra Popp are also lurking one point behind.
Bayer Leverkusen is also within striking distance, three points behind the top of the table. The “Werkself” even have a game in hand.
