Totti Nyberg, who worked for the Finnish brand for almost 20 years, is stepping down from his role as Makia boss.

Nyberg, who has been the Helsinki-based brand’s chief executive officer and creative director since September 2019, announced his departure on Thursday on the career network Linkedin. Before he took over the creative and operational management, he had held various management positions in the company since 2007. Since April last year, he has also served as Chief Brand Officer for Finlayson & Co Oy, a Finnish company responsible for the business of Makia as well as other brands such as Finlayson, Vallila and Reino & Aino.

“What started from scratch developed into a brand with a turnover of over twelve million euros in one of the toughest and most competitive industries in the world,” sums up Nyberg. “Along the journey, we’ve faced countless challenges, avoided not one but two narrow bankruptcies and worked more night shifts than I can count. Seeing how well the company is doing today – despite everything we’ve been through – makes me incredibly proud and I’m incredibly excited for what lies ahead. A great future is built on a strong foundation.”

Although Nyberg is withdrawing from the operational business, he will remain a shareholder in the company and will also continue to expand the side project Makia Creative, which advises other Finnish companies.

Makia was founded in Helsinki in 2001 by Ivar Fougstedt and professional snowboarders Joni Malmi and Jussi Oksanen. The brand stands for simple and functional streetwear. It is available from online retailers such as About You and Zalando, among others.
