Major research into pesticides and cardiac arrhythmias with the help of measurements from Drenthe

Scientists are looking at a possible link between cardiac arrhythmias and pesticides. A new, major study that has been running since October should provide a definitive answer. The information from the Drenthe club Meten=Weten is used for this. That is why researchers are coming to Drenthe today to talk about their research.

Professor Bianca Brundel of the Amsterdam UMC who is involved in the research notes that ‘quite a lot’ of pesticides are used in the Netherlands. “If this could indeed be a trigger for a cardiac arrhythmia, then it’s important to properly investigate this trigger,” she says.

It all started in 2020. Then the Afib foundation asked patients what they think is a possible cause of the heart rhythm disorder. “Then we saw in the answers that some patients indicated that working with pesticides is a trigger for their heart rhythm disorder,” says Brundel. “Since very little is known about this possible link, we picked it up and started testing it.”
