Rijkswaterstaat faces a major challenge next year, because the Dutch infrastructure is in need of a major overhaul. Major maintenance will also be carried out in various places in Drenthe in 2026.
Many kilometers of asphalt in our province are waiting for repair or renewal. Various work will be carried out next year, especially around Hoogeveen. For example, there is major maintenance from Zuidwolde, where the N48 in a northerly direction meets the A28 at the Hoogeveen junction. This work continues towards Pesse. The asphalt on the route needs to be replaced and guardrails and verges are being tackled.
In a southerly direction, similar work will take place on the A28 between the Fluitenberg exit and Zuidwolde in 2026. This is also the case with the section of the highway between Beilen and Assen-Zuid. In the opposite direction, Rijkswaterstaat will extend the life of the asphalt with a special treatment.
The same job is also being carried out on the A28 between Assen and Groningen. In a northerly direction, the work starts from the connection with the N34. The route continues until the Groningen Ring Road. In a southerly direction, Rijkswaterstaat is also working on the A28 from the Groningen Ring. The work ends at Ubbena.
Major maintenance of the infrastructure is desperately needed, according to a spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat. “We tackle many things, not only the asphalt but also hectometre posts and verges, for example. After that, this infrastructure can last another five or six years. Although that remains dependent on various factors.”
For example, a harsh winter can throw a spanner in the works. “Then you can cause additional damage to the road surface. Moreover, there is a greater risk of accidents,” the spokesperson said.
