Venezuela has been rocked by two powerful earthquakes, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, according to the US Geological Survey. These seismic events stand among the most significant earthquakes recorded globally this year.

High Casualty Estimates

The Venezuelan government has reported at least 32 fatalities and over 700 injuries nationwide. However, models from the US Geological Survey suggest a grave possibility of more than a thousand casualties, given the earthquake’s strength and proximity to densely populated urban areas.

In the capital city, Caracas, several buildings have collapsed. Notably, a 22-story high-rise in the Altamira district was almost completely destroyed, prompting rescue teams to search for survivors amid the rubble throughout the night. The earthquakes struck on a national holiday celebrating Venezuela’s independence, which meant many residents were at home when disaster struck.

Moments of Terror

USGS reports indicate that there were only 39 seconds between the two earthquakes. The first quake occurred on Wednesday at 18:04 local time, 24 kilometers east of San Felipe, at a depth of 21.9 kilometers. The second, stronger quake struck just a few kilometers north of the first and was only about 10 kilometers deep, likely magnifying its destructive impact.

A Historic Disaster

The hardest-hit area is the state of La Guaira, which houses the international airport of Caracas and a crucial seaport. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez described the situation as a tragedy and labeled the earthquakes “unprecedented” for Venezuela, declaring La Guaira a disaster zone.

State of Emergency Declared

Rodríguez has declared a state of emergency and reported suspensions of metro and gas services in Caracas. She urged citizens to report any damages through a government app, while train services have been halted, and the international Simón Bolívar Airport has been closed due to structural damage. Schools are also being closed temporarily.

“We call upon our people to remain calm,” Rodríguez stated. “We urge unity.” Moreover, she requested that healthcare workers report to hospitals to help treat the injured, while some schools will function as emergency shelters and donation centers.

Critical Situation Acknowledged

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello characterized the situation as “extremely alarming,” advising people to stay in safe locations. After such powerful quakes, aftershocks are typically expected, which could further destabilize already damaged structures. Authorities have also ordered the gas supply to be cut off to prevent potential explosions.

The effects of the double tremor were felt even in Colombia’s capital, Bogotá, about a thousand kilometers away from the epicenter. Residents rushed into the streets, and alarm sirens were activated. The US Tsunami Warning Center issued multiple tsunami alerts, which were later rescinded.

International Aid Offers

In response to the disaster, the United States has announced the immediate dispatch of rescue teams, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating, “America stands by the Venezuelan people in this difficult time.” On President Trump’s orders, search and rescue teams, medical resources, and humanitarian aid are being sent to the affected region.

Rodríguez has reported that Qatar has already sent rescue personnel, with their arrival expected on Friday. Teams from Mexico and El Salvador are also en route, while Ecuador has announced plans for aid deliveries. Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz expressed his country’s readiness to provide support, and the Brazilian government has conveyed its solidarity.

Major earthquakes are relatively rare in Venezuela. Although the country is near several fault lines, its geographical location between the South American and Caribbean plates results in lower seismic activity compared to other Latin American regions.
