The move to Mainz 05 in January 2024 was perhaps the best decision in Nadiem Amiri’s career. Next weekend, the 29-year-old could play for the Zero Fives for the last time in the away game in Heidenheim – even though his contract is still valid until the summer of 2027. There are increasing signs that the midfielder is looking for a change.
Amiri avoided questions about his future on Sunday evening at the “DAZN” microphone after the 1:3 (0:1) against Union Berlin. With statements like “I don’t know” or “I don’t understand” he left the Mainz fans in the dark as to whether they would be losing their crowd favorite for the second year in a row after Jonathan Burkardt, who played a key role in the good development of the last two years.
Sports director Niko Bungert tried to be confident: “We are relatively relaxed about it. We have not received any signal from Nadiem or from a club that a change is on the cards. There is speculation about Nadiem in every transfer phase, so far he is still here and happy.”
For Amiri, who has increased his market value since the move from 4 million to 20 million euros (currently €17 million), there is a lot at stake in the coming weeks. On the one hand, he still wants to get on the World Cup bandwagon after missing the last two DFB training courses in November and March due to injury. On the other hand, the last big change and lucrative contract could be possible five months before the 30th birthday.

The Turkish champions Galatasaray are said to be interested in the rumor mill. Cimbom will play in the Champions League again next season, while Mainz will have to do without international football in 2026/27 after reaching the Conference League quarter-finals.
