Mainz coach Siewert apparently on the verge of elimination

FSV Mainz 05 is deep in the relegation battle. The club may soon take on a new coach.

Only one win from 21 Bundesliga games, the only success so far dates back to November 4th (2-0 against RB Leipzig), currently in 17th place and already four points behind relegation place 16: FSV Mainz 05 has been deep in crisis for months. Now the club could change coaches for the second time this season.

Because “Bild” reports: Head coach Jan Siewert is about to be eliminated from the 05ers. Sunday’s 3-1 defeat against VfB Stuttgart could be the 41-year-old’s last game on the Rheinhessen bench.

“We need victories”

It would be a short term of office: Siewert only took over from long-time coach Bo Svensson at the beginning of November last year, who had to leave after a completely botched start to the season and elimination in the second round of the DFB Cup. Despite a surprise win in the first game against Leipzig, there was no improvement at FSV under Siewert. The coach himself said to “Bild”: “Basically, we in the coaching team have done everything we can to ensure that the team is successful in every game.” The team “did not give up. I am sure that this process we are in will lead to victories.”

Sports director Martin Schmidt said after the Stuttgart game: “We’ll sit down together and see what the next steps are. It’s clear that we can’t continue playing like this. We need victories.” The Swiss avoided a clear commitment to Siewert: “The tendency is very clear that we analyze it together. But we have to change something, you can see that. But we’ll discuss it in a narrow circle – with the coach and among ourselves Looking for solutions.”
