Jeremiah St. Juste is in rehab at Mainz 05 after a shoulder injury. Whether the central defender will play for Rheinhessen again this season is an open question – as is his future in Mainz. The 25-year-old’s contract ends in 2023 and he currently has no ambitions to extend it. Christian Heidel confirmed this on Sunday in an interview with “SWR Sports“: “At the moment there are no impulses to extend this – on the part of the players,” said the sports director, who meant not only St. Juste but also captain Moussa Niakhaté, whose working paper also expires in 2023.

Together, the central defender duo has a market value of 34 million euros and should under no circumstances be given up for free, as Heidel confirmed, which is why changes are likely next summer. St. Juste could be drawn to Sporting Lisbon in Portugal. According to information from the “picture“ have already met for negotiations.

Accordingly, Mainz should demand a transfer fee of around 10 million euros plus possible additional payments – a sum that Sporting is willing to invest. But St. Juste is still hesitating with his decision, although he could play in the Champions League with the “Lions” next season. After the 32nd match day of the Portuguese league, Sporting are in second place with eight points more than Benfica.

When he was signed in 2019, the right-footer, coming from Feyenoord, cost 8 million euros, making him the record signing for the 05ers to this day. With earnings of 10 million euros, St. Juste would meanwhile join Ridle Baku (24) in tenth place in the ranking of the most expensive departures.
