After 24 missions
Karim Onisiwo will no longer be seen in the ÖFB dress in the future. As the association announced on Friday, the attacker from German Bundesliga club Mainz 05 has decided not to play for the national team in the future. The decisive factor for this was “sporting and private reasons”.
The now 31-year-old made his debut for the Austrian team in November 2015, then as a striker for SV Mattersburg. After only playing a minor role for a long time, from 2019 he was almost always part of Franco Foda and Ralf Rangnick’s squad. His personal highlight in the national team was participating in the 2021 European Championships, where he reached the round of 16 with Austria. In his eight years at ÖFB he made 24 appearances and scored one goal.

Onisiwo said about his resignation: “This step is not easy for me, I was happy about every nomination and enjoyed playing in the national team. There are sporting and private reasons for my resignation, which I have discussed with the team boss in the past few weeks. Ultimately, I made the decision to concentrate fully on my club Mainz 05 and my family. I will continue to follow the ÖFB team’s games as a fan and hope for a successful European Championship.”
