Mainz 05 closes the 2021/22 financial year with a profit

“There’s still a lot to do for all of us”

Mainz 05 is back in the black after two loss-making years due to the pandemic. The Rheinhessen closed the 2021/22 season with a profit of 3.3 million euros after taxes. The association announced this at its general meeting on Monday. In the previous year, Mainz recorded a minus of 10.2 million euros, before that it was 2.2 million euros. The total turnover in the past season was 115 million euros and thus almost 20 million euros above that of the 2020/21 season.

“We can be satisfied with the development of the past year. Club, team and fans are again a stronger unit than in the past,” said sporting director Christian Heidel. However, the 59-year-old warned that one should not make the mistake of “patting ourselves bruises on the shoulders out of sheer praise and self-praise. There’s still a lot to do for all of us, especially in terms of viewership and the club’s dependence on transfer income current season after a change period is 8.45 million euros. League-wide only six teams have a higher plus.

The club also sees itself on target in terms of sport. “I think we have a team again that gets up when they fall down. We’re ninth with 18 points and we still have three games this year to add a few more points,” said Heidel. For Mainz, before the World Cup break, it is still against Wolfsburg, Schalke and Frankfurt.

The team and coach Bo Svensson deserve “a huge compliment,” said Heidel. There are only a few teams that have been in the Bundesliga longer at a time than Mainz, which has been there without interruption since 2009. Only Hoffenheim and Gladbach (both since 2008) as well as Wolfsburg (1997), Leverkusen (1979), Dortmund (1976) and FC Bayern (1965) have been in the game longer. “We’ll do everything we can to ensure that we have another year after this season,” promised Heidel.
