Chess king Magnus Carlsen and girlfriend Ella Victoria Malone tied the knot on Saturday and celebrated their dream wedding at the legendary Holmenkollen in Oslo. The couple actually wanted to hold the wedding behind closed doors, but that didn’t work.

The king of chess has a new queen: On Saturday, Norwegian superstar Magnus Carlsen married his girlfriend Ella Victoria Malone. The couple said yes in the Holmenkollen Chapel in the north of the city of Oslo.

Numerous press representatives were there to get the first snapshot of the couple, who made every effort to keep the upcoming wedding secret. However, a few days ago the secret became public. It quickly emerged that the wedding would take place this weekend and in Oslo.

Chess King Carlsen marries “an absolutely great woman”

It was a “beautiful ceremony,” Carlsen’s friend Sverre Krogh Sundbø told the TV station “NRK.” It is now time to finally celebrate something other than Carlsen’s achievements on the chess board. The wedding may even be “his greatest achievement of all. He’s marrying an absolutely great woman,” said Sundbø, who concluded by joking: “Hopefully she has more control here than Magnus.”

Relatively little is known about Carlsen’s new wife. Carlsen and Malone appeared together in public for the first time in February last year at a tournament in Germany. In the months that followed, the 26-year-old was at numerous events at the Norwegian’s side.

In one of her rare interviews, she told TV2 that she was slowly getting used to being a public figure, but was now getting better at dealing with the cameras and the hype.
